Scottsboro Trials

What are the similarities between the Scottsboro Trials and To Kill a Mockingbird?  Be specific.

  1. A big similarity between the Scottsboro Trials and To Kill A Mockingbird is the racism. The Scottsboro trials went on for so long mainly because the nine boys were black and every person in the jury and even the judge were white males. When James Horton became the new judge for the trials, he thought the boys deserved a better trial so in comparison, he's just like Atticus. Another similarity is the accusation of the trials which was rape. In the book, they don't really seem to go into detail about having evidence and in the Scottsboro trials there wasn't much evidence to take from the scene either.

  2. There are many similarities between the Scottsboro Trials and To Kill A Mockingbird. One of the main ones, was the amount of prejudice present in both. Also, the fact that both Jury's were all white men. Another, is that nobody cared what was right and wrong, they just placed the blame on African Americans. It was a white young girl who blamed an African American of raping them. Without any proof. Just the girls word. They are very similar.

  3. There are many similarities between the Scottsboro trials and TKAM because TKAM was based on these trials. Black men were accused of rape, and Tom Robinson is accused of rape. The black men are treated unfairly by the public, and the people in Maycomb try to lynch Robinson. One of the accusers of the Scottsboro rape was once in trouble for hugging a black man, which is included somewhere in TKAM, by one of the characters.

  4. The similarities between the Scottsboro Trials and To Kill A Mockingbird are as follows. There is a black man (or in the case of Scottsboro, nine) being accused by a white woman for rape. The odds are greatly stacked against the "rapist(s)", and all seems lost. Though a hero comes in and does everything in his power to help protect these people. In the Scottsboro trials it was James Horton the judge, and TKAM it was Atticus the lawyer.

  5. There are a few similarities to the Tom Robinson trial and the Scottsboro trials. Both trials were about black males who have been falsely accused of raping white women. Also in both trials, the black people were both defended by white lawyers. Both of the trials occur in the same time period. Lastly, both trials take place in Alabama. Those are the similarities between the Scottsboro and Tom Robinson trials.

  6. The similarities between the Scottsboro Trials and To Kill a Mockingbird. in The Scottsboro Trials the nine boys are being charged with raping two woman. and also in To Kill a Mockingbird Tom Robbison is being charged with rape. Some people compare Judge Horton to Atticus because they both know what is right and equal. -Michael Curcio

  7. The Scottsboro Trials and To Kill a Mockingbird have a lot of similarities. For instance Judge James Horton is a lot like Atticus. They both believe that both blacks and whites should have equal rights. Also the Scottsboro Trials and To Kill a Mockingbird are alike because both the black men are being accused of rape. Both cases do not have enough evidence to back it up. But because they are black and are accused of rapping a white women they think it is ok.

  8. There are a good amount of similarities between the Scotsboro Trials and the book To Kill A Mockingbird. The proceedings of the trials mirror each other. Tom Robinson is a black man whose race makes him automatically guilty in the eyes of the court. The Scotsboro boys were all black children, who never had a chance for a fair trial even after multiple proceedings. And Atticus mirrors the character of the heroic judge that finally gave the Scotsboro Nine a voice. Their characters are reminiscent of one another.

  9. There are several similarities between the Scottsboro Trials and the trial in To Kill a Mocking Bird. Both trials involve an African American being accused of rape. Another similarity is that the trials had caused controversy and stirred the emotions of people. In addition, there are people who don't support the defendent and there are people who support the defendent. There were rallies for the African American boys and the NAACP who supported the defendents of the real trials. In TKAM there are people like the reporter with a shot gun up in his office and the other group of people that gathered in front of Atticus' house. The victim is also unreliable. With the real trials the victim was a prostitute and the other victim had retracted her statement, where as the TKAM trials have one of the Ewells as a victim, who aren't anywhere near being trustworthy. Finally, another similarity is that the trials are taking a very long time to finish. The Scottsboro trials take decades where the TKAM trial has been going on for approximately three years now.

  10. There are many similarities between the Scottsboro Trials and "To Kill a Mockingbird". For example, Attics represents the actual hero of the case which was Judge Horton. Both of these cases seemed to have the African Americans boys convicted as guilty before any trial had begun. Both had white men trying to harm them outside of the prison. Also, like the Scottsboro boys, the character in the novel seems to have a lot of support from other African Americans. Both of these trials show the racism and anger of the south. Finally, all of the victims appear to be innocent.

  11. There are many similarities between the Scottsboro Trials and To Kill A Mockingbird. Both have a figure that supports equal rights and take the side of the accused. In To Kill A Mockingbird that figure is Atticus. In the Scottsboro Trials that figure is Judge Horton. Both of them also have a black man or group of men charged or accused of something. Thomas Robinson is the African American accused in To Kill A Mockingbird. In the Scottsboro Trials, those boys accused are the Scottsboro 9. Finally, both take place in the South during a time when relations between blacks and whites were very tense. These are just s few of the many similarities between the Scottsboro Trials and To Kill A Mockingbird.

  12. One big similarity in the Scottboro Trials and To Kill a Mockingbird is, the racsits thoughts of the people. The Scottsboro Boys trial went on for about nine years. More or less because the jury was all racsits whites. One big similarity of the book and the actual trials was Judge Horton, because he resembled Atticus in the book. He felt the boys deserved better than opinionated accusations towards the boys. Both stories took place around the Great Depression.

  13. There are striking similarities between the Scottsboro Trials and To Kill A Mockingbird. In both cases, there are black person(s) on trial for raping white women. Not to mention, the odds are not in the accused's favor, with a racist jury. Even though there are people who go to help, it doesn't seem like (or with the Scottsboro case, it didn't) it will help much. In TKAM, it was Atticus who helped the accused, while the real-life hero in the Scottsboro trials was James Horton, Judge.

  14. There are many similarities between the Scottsboro Trials and To Kill a Mockingbird. One of the biggest similarities between them was that the jury was all white. The main point is racism. Is the society that the world was in at that point, you should not have an all white jury, it wouldn't be fair.

  15. The two main similarities is the trial and the defendant and Atticus. Atticus resembles James Horton who was a judge on the case. Also instead of of a group of nine there is just Tom Robinson. The accusation in both though is the same. The trial in TKAM is similar to the scotsboro trials.

  16. There are many similarities in TKAM and the Scottboro trials. One in particular is racism. Both have African American men being guilty for rape. Also, the men in each situation do not get a fair trail what so ever. Both are set during a rough time period for people and both have a heroic man that stands up for Thomas Robinson and the nine young men in the Scottboro trials. In TKAM Atticus is the heroic man and in the Scottboro trials udge Horton is the heroic man. Another similarity would be that all the African American men were accused of rape by white women. Overall the men in both situations seem to be innocent but get no say and are held guilty until proven innocent.

  17. There is one big similarity between the scottsboro trial and TKAM. This similarity is racism. Nine boys were the cause of the scottsboro trial. It went on for a very long time just because they were a different color. The ones judging it were white. But they got a new judge who cared. Just like Atticus in TKAM he cared for all people no matter what and helped them. That's how the two are similar

  18. There are numerous similarities between to kill a mockingbird and the scottsboro trials. The main similarity is the racism toward blacks, and the main hatred many people had for them. Also, in both the trials and the book involve false accusation of raping and beating white women, without proof. Also, when put to trial they were unfairly judged by all white males. They are also similar because they both had a white male who fought for their rights bearing ridicule and hate from others.

  20. I similarities with the Scottboro trail and To Kill a Mocking bird, is almost anything in the book. Besides some of the characters and setting. The main issue in the story is for an african american that is on trail for a crime he did not commit. This is the same in the scottboro trials. Atticus the hero figure of the story, he is similar to the judge that started to see the wholes in the Scottboro trials and lead the men to get a proper trailand to be later set free. Another similarity is how the jury for both of the trails are all white men and being in the south they were more towards the men/man in both of the trails to be guilty. These are just a few of the similarities in the story of To Kill a Mockingbird and the Scottboro trials

  21. The Scottsboro Trials and To Kill a Mockingbird have some similarities. In the Scottsboro Trials there was someone defending nine black men. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus defended a black man. In both of them, it involved rape. What they both have in common is that they both have something to do with racism. In that time period, black men and women were not seen as equal citizens. So defending one in court would be very difficult.

  22. There are many similar events between the scottsboro trials and To kill a mockingbird. In both there is someone that supports the blacks and gets them a fair trial, in to kill a mockingbird that person is atticus, and in the Scottsboro trials the person is judge horton. Also in both the scottsboro trials and to kill a mockingbird there is severe racial tension between the white people and african americans and both judge horton and atticus are ridiculed for supporting them. Also both of these events occured during the great depression.

  23. There are several similarities between the Scottsboro trials and to kill a mocking bird. One main similarity is that black men are being accused of raping white women. Also, the judge in the Scottsboro case was a lot like Atticus. Both fight for the side less desired though it tarnished their reputations. Both have a great deal of racism throughout the entire events. The racism plays a large role in the decisions and actions taken in both.

  24. There are a few similarities between the actual Scottsboro Trials and To Kill A Mockingbirds' version. The only large similarity I saw was the effect of racism on the people. The case caused huge controversy in the question human rights and whether the south was ready to accept that their ways are not civil, but more like the barbarism that they blame blacks for. There are a few smaller similarities. As in the time period and the reference to actual historical events. There are many minor differences between the book and the history. Judge Horton in the book is Atticus. Atticus represents equal rights and the bridge to it at the end of the trail. I think he may also play a double role as Liebowitz. Only one person is being accused, while nine were accused in the actual case. In the actual historical case there were two women in the book there is only one girl, she and her father represent the old south and the racism that holds all of them in the past.

  25. Some of the similarities between the two trials are obvious. They both involve a black man being accused by white people. There is a man that wants the black man to go free with a fair trial rather than just to rot in jail for a crime that the man did not commit. The Scottsboro boys were just a group of black men that had the same problem as Tom Robinson had in To Kill a Mockingbird. Both the Scottsboro boys and Tom Robinson were accused of crimes they did not commit.

  26. The major similarities between the scottsboro trials and the to kill a mocking bird trial is that they are both rape cases. The two cases are also both in the south during time periods were blacks had little rights. Both of the defendants are black. This is a major part of the trials because they cant win. They both take place in racist towns.
