  1. The elments of romanticism is displaied through when they describe nature or the mountain by talking about how the mountains chance with weather or by the feelings of the town ; change in magical hues and shapes of these mountains'' pat adams

Rip Wan Winkle shows some examples of Romanticism. It shows imagination when Rip Van Winkle meets the ghost of himself in the forest. He asks the guy to drink his liquor and make him fall asleep for twenty years. The author describes the guy as "a short, square-built old fellow, with thick bushy hair hair and a grizzled beard." He also starts to get to know the guy more. He even gets the guy to talk about the mountains.

  3. The elements of romanticism that apper in "Rip Van Winkle" are the imagery of the mouintains that reflect the mood and weather by turning blue and purple when it's a clear day and gray when it's gloomy and cloudy. Also, letting people know how Rip feels about his wife and how he gets away from her by going outside and meeting up with the sages and philosophers show elements of romanticism. Rip is more sensitive and his wife is more aggressive, which is not the ideal thing of the world. Usually the man is more aggressive. I'm not entirely sure what I'm writing. Years of marriage wore on Rip and made him more sensitive. "Times grew worse and worse with Rip Van Winkle as years of matrimony rolled on..."

  4. In Rip Van Winkle, imagination appears when the stranger shows up.The man somehow knew his name. nobody really follows a man in the woods to go drink in the woods. He woke up 20 years later from a party. When he wakes up his children are all there and his wife is gone. "On nearer approach he was still more surprised at the singularity of the stranger's apperanced.(irving,158)"

  5. Rip Van Winkle would do what his instincts told him to do which would be to do no profitable work."For he would sit on a wet rock with a rod as heavy as a Tartars lance, and fish all day without a murmur, even though he should ot be encouraged by a single nibble."(Rip Van Winkle 156) Tom Sanders

Well they appear in the story because i think its about indivdual freedom. Also he is a very good man because he helps people out in the town. His wife really gets angry at him alot but she gets over it. The fence has fell down and the cow got out. Ramonaticism really relies on this story because this is the entire story. I think the details were very good. " Slept threw the war "

  7. The elements of Romanticism appear in "Rip Van Winkle". Romanticism refers to a movement in art, literature, and music during the 19th century. It is characterized by the five "I's". One of the "I's" that Rip Van Winkle represents is imagination. This story is filled with imagination. No man could sleep for 20 years and survive without any necessities. Romanticism values the beauty in exotic locals, the supernatural, and the imagination. The story talks about the mountains, "Every hour of the day, produces some change in the magical hues and shapes of these mountains," (155, Irving). They talk about the beauty and the supernatural behavior of the mountains.

  8. Individuality is talked about alot in Rip Van Winkle. Rip wants to be free from his wife so he can do things like fish and hunt whenever he wants. Once he realizes that his wife has died, "there is a drop of comfort at least in this intelligence" (Irving 164). Nature plays another important part in the story. Rip falls asleep in the middle of a woods. Him falling asleep for 20 years is what frees him from things and people he doesn't like because they are either dead or have moved away. By the end of the story, Rip is able to be independent and do what he wants without having to listen to his wife.

  9. I believe there was several elements of Romanticism that appeared in Rip Van Winkle. One in particular was imagination. I believe imagination appeared in Rip Van Winkle because Rip had pasted out for more than 20 years. The story also describes the village and how the mountains make the mood of people. Also, the story tells how the village has changed over 20 years which makes you imagine how you would cope with that kind of situation. Another element that was involved was intuition because Rip instantly thought that the people he drank with the night before had taken his dog and gun."He determined to revisit the scene of the last evening's gambol, and if he met with any of the party, to demand his dog and gun"(Irving 160). This quote describes how Rip's instincts made him think the best thing to do was go back to the scene and see if he can find anyone or any evidence that would explain what happen

  10. The elements of Romanticism appear all throughout the story. One that stood out was imagination. It started when we was following the stranger throught the forest & most vividly showed itself when we say the old men playing their version of bowling, or ninepins. It was also noticeable is the qualities of the Romantic Hero, as he is Moral & Honorable, One with Nature, Brave, & not shy around women. Finally, it can be seen in how the mountains can change color, depening on the mood of the person, like how they are grey when there is sadness & blueish-purple when happy. "On a level spot in the center was a company of odd-looking personages playing at ninepins" (Irving 159).

  11. There are different elements of Romanticism that show up in Rip Van Winkle. One element that shows up throught the entire story is imagery. He talks about the beautfil mountians, "They are clothed in blue and purple, and print their bold outlines on the clear evening sky; but sometimes, when the rest og the landscape is cloudless, the gather a hood of gray"(Irving 155). Another element is imagination. He talks about how Rip feel sleep for twenty years. And how the village has changed.

  12. The main element in Romantism is imagination. Imagination is displayed throughout this play, by us imagining how life would be in 20 years, or falling asleep for 20 years. What would life be like? Imagination was emphasized over "reason", it was backlash against the rationalism charactized by the Neoclassical period or "Age of Reason". "These mountains beds do not agree with me" (160). We also have to imagine that the mountains could change peoples moods of the village.

  13. The elements of Romanticism appear in Rip Van Winkle in many ways. One way that it really show is with imagination. When he describes the mountains he says " When the weather is fair and settled they are clothed in blue and purple.." (Irving 155). This shows Romanticism because of how he goes into detail on explaining how the mountains look in different in certain weathers. Also being asleep for 20 year in not believable at all. So when the author wrote this he had to be using his imagination.

  14. All the elements of Romanticism are displayed in the story "Rip Van Winkle". I think the element we can see the most is imagery. The author helps us picture the mountains in our head with much detail. "Every hour of the day, produces some change in the magical hues and shapes of these mountains," ( Irving, 155). We also see a lot of imagination. The main character of the story drinks alcohol and falls in a deep sleep for 20 years, which is not physically possible. We have to imagine some of the events in this story. These are only 2 of the five I's that are displayed in "Rip Van Winkle".

  16. Many different elements appear in Romanticism in "Rip Van Winkle". One of the many different elements is imagination. Imagination is in this because it made us think about how life would be like 20 years from now. Imagination is in this because, "These mountains beds do not agree with me" (160). That's and example because it has us think about how mountains could have beds in them.

  18. An element of Romanticism in Irvings 'Rip Van Winkle' is imagination. “His mind now misgave him; he began to doubt whether both he and the world around him were not bewitched." This quote shows Rip cannot determine whether he is living reality or not. He imagines he is still drunk or in a dream.

  19. In romantic literature, five qualities are expressed: imagination, intuition, idealism, inspiration, and individualism. The romantic short story "Rip Van Winkle" exemplifies imagination and individualism. Rip is an individual. The narrator says, "...in a word Rip was ready to attend to anybody's business but his own," (Irving 156). While other men won't help their wives, Rip will help other peoples wives. It sets him apart from the other men and it's only one of his many characteristics that makes him an individual. The story itself also contains elements of imagination. The narrator says, "Rip's story was soon told, for the whole twenty years had been to him but as one night," (Irving 164). Rip had fallen asleep for twenty years. It's impossible to be asleep for twenty years without dying which shows an element of imagination by bringing something that is impossible to fruition in literature.

  20. The elements of Romanticism in Rip Van Winkle are that of nature, innocence bravery and imagination. Rip excludes most of the romantic elements through his actions. Not only does Rip trust the man in the woods, he follows him and drinks from his keg, Rip was brave. Nature is also a leading element in the story. "...was to take gun in hand and stroll away into the
woods. "(Irving 152) Rip was close to nature. Rip Van Winkle has many elements of Romanticism. Brooke ottinger

  21. In Rip Van Winkle, the entire idea of the story is imaginative. He falls asleep for 20 years, which is just a "What if this happened...?" kind of story. His entire life is very imaginative, not helping his own family, or his farm, not arguing with Dame Van Winkle. He follows a stranger who is carrying a keg up the mountain, and if the neighborhood wives need soemthing to do, "They will come to Rip". Rip's entire life is a entire thought of imagination, and it is proven well, and still overall a good story.

  22. one of the main elements of romanticism is imagery.imagery is dispayed numerous of times throughout the story. talking about the landscapes that are shown. ''They are clothes in blue and purple and thri print bold outlines, for landscape and clouds. (irving 155). all of the imagery iin the story is shown through what the characters say.

  23. Rip Van Winkle incorporates many or the elements of Romantism. For example, imagination is used throughout the entire story. When Rip wakes up after sleeping for twenty years the author imagines what his life would be like when he woke up. Also, intuition was used because Rip drank from the keg of the strangers. He used instinct rather than reason. He did not think through his actions before he did them. Inspiration was used because Rip was a good natured person and well like by many people. "Rip Van Winkle, however, was one of those happy mortals of foolish, well-oiled dipositions, who take the world easy, eat white bread or brown, whichever can be got with least thought or trouble, and would rather starve on a penny than work for a pound."

  24. In Rip Van Winkle, there's a lot nature involved. It's one of them ain elements of the Romanticism within the story. For example, Rip likes to go outside and into the woods as an escape to get away from his wife. Another good example is, "When the weather is fair and settled, they are clothed in blue and purple"(Irving155). "They" is referring to the mountains in the story explaing they're significance in nature.

  25. In Rip Van Winkle there are many elements of Romanticism. One would be the fact that he's like the Romantic Hero. Imagination is portrayed by things such as the 20 year sleep and the people playing bowling. "That it was affirmed that the great Hendrick Hudson, the first discover of the river and country, kept a kind of vigil there every twenty years, with his crew of Half Moon-being permitted in this way to revisit th3e scenes of his enterprise and keep a guardian eye upon the river and the great city called by his name." (Pg. 164) Idealism from Rip helping everyone to do things. Rip Van Winkle does have American Romanticism in it though.

  26. The mAin things in the story of rip van wrinkle was imagination. Many things in the story are imagination related. Like when Irving describes the mountains " When the weather is fair and settled they are clothed in blue and purple, and print their bold outlines on the clear evening sky"(Irving 155). In realists stories they wouldn't describe the mountains like that, they would just say that the mountains are in the backround. It is very imaginative to point the different colors out in the way that Irving did.

  27. Although there are many different elements of Romanticism in Rip Van Winkle; there is one that shows up a lot. That would be imagery. He gets into detail about the mountains, "They are clothed in blue and purple, an print their bold outlines on the clear evening sky; but sometimes, when the rest of the landscape is cloudless, they gather a hood of gray"( Irving 155). Another element is imagination. The whole story is made up but at the end the false author leaves you a note convincing you that the story is true.

  28. In my opinion, the ideas of Romanticism displayed in "Rip Van Winkle" are idealism, imagination, intuition, and individuality. Idealism and imagination factor into his sleeping for 20 years. Intuition relates to his immediate thoughts to go out in search of the man with the keg. After Rip tried and failed to find his gun and dog, it is written that "He determined to revisit the scene of the last evening's gambol, and if he met with any of the party, to demand his dog and gun" (160). Also, this story drastically displays individuality. It is said that "he would sit on a wet rock, with a rod as long and heavy as a Tartar's lance, and fish all day without a murmur, even though he should not be encouraged by a single nibble" (156).

  29. The most apparent theme that expresses Romanticism in Rip Van Winkle is imagery. The best example of imagery is the description of the mountains. "They are clothed in blue and purple, and print their bold outlines on the clear evening sky; but sometimes, when the rest of the landscape is cloudless, the gather a hood of gray"(Irving 155). This quote defines the Romantic era it shows the beauty of nature and its perfect simplicity. This quote is also what makes imagery such an apparent theme in Rip Van Winkle.

  30. Elements of Romanticism appear in Rip Van Winkle. One of the elements that appeared in Rip Van Winkle is imagery. For example, when the weather changes, the magical hues and shapes of the mountains also changed. "When the weather is far and settled they are clothed in blue and purple, and print their bold outlines on the clear evening sky" (Irving 155). Also, imagination appears in Rip Van Winkle. A stranger gave him a drink and he ended up sleeping for twenty years.

  31. There was a lot of Romanticism is Rip Van Winkle. There is the journey away some place to some place. Also, there is the way the connection to nature, the mountains and how Rip fell asleep in the forest. There are other elements of Romanticism in this story. That would be how Rip represents characteristics of a Romantic hero. The author states "The magical hues and shapes of these mountains..." (Irving 155). That is how nature is being expressed in the story. Thaddeus Wascheck

  32. Two elements of Romanticsim that appear in "Rip Van Winkle" are imagination and individuality. Rip goes off on his own to get away from his troubles. Which happen to be his nagging wife and his own chores. He is very kind and will do anything anyone asks of him, but won't do his own work. And imagination is a huge part of this story. If it wasn't included, this wouldn't be of the Romantic period. It gives us the imagery of the mountains right from the beginning "...every change in of weather, indeed every hour of the day, produces some change in the magical hues and shapes of the moutains..." (155). This paints a picture for us to visualize the setting of "Rip Van Winkle".

  33. There is much Nature in the story of Rip Van Winkle. He used it to escape for his troubles and it is the place to where he slept for 20 years. "On awakening he found himself on the green knoll form whence he had first seen the old man of the glen" They also use the mountains for the way of explaining how the weather changes. "When the weather is fair and settled hey are clothed in blue and purple.." There are many different things that are related to Rip that are used with nature as an explanation and for a description.
