Atticus questions him, asking why no official doctor report was given, and it is revealed the concentration of the bruises are on the right side of her face. Then Bob Ewell is called up, and he explains that after coming out of the woods, he hears his daughter scream, he looks in the window, and sees Tom Robinson raping his daughter. Atticus questions again why no doctor was called, then asks Ewell to write his name. Heck Tates says that her right eye was blackened. Atticus questions him along with Mr. Ewell, trying to make it sound like Mr. Ewell did this to his daughter. He made Mr. Ewell right his name to show that he is left handed. It's not just a coincidence that his daughter's right eye is blackened.
In the court scene in chapter 17, Jem, Scout, and Dill sit up in the balcony of the court room with the Black observers. Heck Tate is the first witness. He explains the injuries inflicted upon Mayella Ewell. The next witness is Bob Ewell, Mayella's father. Heck Tate had stated the worst of Mayella's injuries had been on the right side of her face. But then Atticus asked Mr. Elwell he he could read and wright, and asked him to wright his name for everyone to see. When he did Atticus showed everyone how he was left handed. Mr. Elwell being left handed means if he would have hit someone it would predominately be on the right side, which is the side of the injuries of Mayella.
The first one called to the stand was Heck Tate. The court room is filled with people to see this event. Reverend Sykes and the children, Jem, Scout, and Dill are up top with the colored. Heck Tate had said Mayella's right eye was bruised. Which means someone must of hit her with there left hand. Mayella said that Tom Robinson has raped her. Therefore the thought of Bob beating her is taken in consideration, after all he is a drunk.

The children go and watch the trial even though they were told to stay out of downtown that day. During the trial, Mr. Gilmer questions Heck Tate about what he saw during the night Mayella supposedly got raped by Tom. We also heard what Bob Ewell experienced that night. And how her right eye was bruised so someone had to hit her with their left hand. Also, Atticus had Bob Ewell write his name on a peice of paper and saw that wrote it with his left hand.
