  1. Walt Whitman was very passionate about things he believed in. He was a man who fought for what he thought was right. He helped others in hospitals, and inspired a majority of people with his style of writing. Whitman chose many different styles of writing, using democracy, growth and death, individual beauty, the human body, and also incorporated a lot of historical events happening at the time in his poetry. "And the great star early droop'd.." from “When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd” tells a metaphorical story about a "star drooping", which is symbolizing Abraham Lincoln.

  2. Walt Whitman’s style of writing is elegant and refined. Walt tries to awe his readers, stun them, inspire them, sweep them off their feet, and make them love to him. Whitman didn't aspire to be an awe shucks regular guy. He aspired to be larger than life. He aspired to be the voice of a new nation. “Be curious, not judgmental” I love this quote by Walt Whitman because being curious is a lot different than being judgmental and it’s important for people to not get the two mixed up. Being curious about someone is a lot nicer then judging a person.

  3. As a poet, Walt Whitman celebrates love, nature and democracy. He writes about the soul, and is very passionate about the things he feels most important in life. Whitman's style of writing could be described as bold and confident. By reading his poems you know exactly how he feels about the topic. "I celebrate myself, and sing myself," is a line from the poem "Song of Myself" written by Walt Whitman. This is a prime example of his bold, confident writing.

Whitman worked as a printer in New York City until a devastating fire in the printing district demolished the industry. He was a guy who fought towards what he thought was the right thing to do. In 1855, Whitman took out a copyright on the first edition of Leaves of Grass, which consisted of twelve untitled poems and a preface. Whitman struggled to support himself through most of his life because he got in trouble througout his career. In the early 1870s, Whitman settled in Camden, NJ, where he had come to visit his dying mother at his brother's house.“What is that you express in your eyes? It seems to me more than all the print I have read in my life.”

  5. Walt Whitman's writing style is relaxed and simple. When I read his poems, I tend to feel like I'm reading a story rather than a poem. His choice of wording is more refined, however. He is clearly an intelligent man. Whitman was also an inspirational man. He once said "Resist much, obey little," which is an inspirational quote directed at those who need to fight for their rights. This also demonstrates his selective word choices.

  6. Walt Whitman is very passionate about his writing. He tries to inspire readers with what he writes & also tries to pass along an important message, along with his opinions. He also tries to encorporate America into his poems, and it makes sense seeing as how he is a very patriotic person. Even though his poems al may have different messages, they all incorporate America in them somehow. one obvious example is in "I Hear America Singing", when he says "I hear America singing, the varied carols I hear", as he talks about the various noises and things that goes on all around America. That & it also helps prove my point since it has America in the title.

  7. Walt Whitman has a very mature way of writing his poems. He uses metaphors to show what he is talking about. The author states "Those of mechanics--each one singing his, as it should be, blithe and strong; / The carpenter singing his, as he measures his plank or beam..."(I hear American Singing 1). In that poem, he is using his sensory experiences to portray the poem the writer. He doesn't have come off as a typical poet. He is easy to understand and comprehend.

  8. Walt Whitman didn't really focus on being a poet. He went through life doing things hear and there. Along the way he thought of stuff and wrote it down. Then eventually he put a book together and decide to be known as a writer. He writes like an everday person about life. "THIS is thy hour O Soul, thy free flight into the wordless..." (Whitman)

  9. Walt Whitman's style of writing is very passionate and inspiring. He tries to inspire his readers to be proud of what they do, especially in his work, "I Hear America Singing". Whitman tries to get the readers to feel a sense of pride. They should be proud to be an American and proud of who they are. He states,"Singing with open mouths their strong melodious songs." This is saying that Americans should take pride in what they do and be proud to be an American. Walt Whitman writes very moving inspirational poems and get the reader to feel him overall emotion.

  11. Walt Whitman is an ingenious and extremely talented artist. He believed strongly in the Civil Rights Movement and he truly fought for what he believed in. Within everything that we have read about Whitman he includes a strong sense of pride. Pride in America and pride in individuality. "Singing with open mouths their strong melodious songs"(line 11). This quote perfectly displays the pride that he feels for his country, not only the pride in his country but the pride in himself. It also shows the type of writing style he uses which is called free verse. This writing style allows him to write poetry that seems almost narrative.

  12. Walt Whitman style is free verse. I think that he did this instead of being in a rhyme or rhythm is that he wanted to be an individual. I also think that his free verse style of writing made him stand out and be able to becaome famous. He also loves what he is writing about and uses that to connect with the strionger emotions of the reader. "She had long eyelashes, he head was bare, her coarse straight locks descended upon her/ voluptuous limbs and reach'd to her feet"(Line 16-17). You can tell that he really cares about the indian girl and feels bad for her because he describes her more than any of the other people in the poem. Walt Whitman was also a little bit ahead of his time and was thinking more modern with his work.

  14. Walt Whitman is a poet that celebrates everyday life, love, and the importance of being proud of yourself. He focused more on what he wanted to say than his style of poetry, which was usually free verse. In his poem "I Hear America Singing", he describes the daily jobs of normal Americans, and the pride and enjoyment they have in their jobs. "I hear America singing, the varied carols I hear" (Whitman, line 1) He uses a common "song" to connect each different workers enjoyment and pride, connecting them as a unified country.

  15. Walt Whitman used a different style of writting. He was all about people being themselves and not what other people wanted. For example, one of his quotes, "do anything, but let it produce joy", it explains to do whatever you want, as long as it gives you, yourself joy.

  16. Walt Whitman was a great lover of life, and appreciator of people, things, beauty, strength, progress and forward movement. He has a very mature way of writing his poems. From the very start of the poem "To a Locomotive in Winter" the feeling is possitive. Walt Whitmans writing style can best be described as bold and confident. He always wants the reader to feel the emotion that he does writting it.

  17. Walt Whitman has a very unique style of writing. He is very insperational in all his works. As a writer he is writing for a purpose. He is trying to inspire his readers to be proud of themselves and the things that they work hard for. A quote from "I Hear America Singing" shows it all "Those of mechanics--each one singing his, as it should be, blithe and strong; / The carpenter singing his, as he measures his plank or beam..." This quote shows that he wants everyone to be proud of themselves for being an American and also, proud of themselves for being a hard worker.

  18. Walt Whitman doesn't seem like a normal poet. His poetry lacks a rhyme scheme and his writings could almost be a really short story, however, I suppose there are elements that make it poetry. Maybe just how it's written makes it poetry. Walt Whitman writes narratively or his poems tell a story. His poems also don't have rhyme schemes so it's not like the stereotypical form of poetry most people are use to. One stanza of "Song of Myself" says, "Alone far in the wilds and mountains I hunt,/ Wandering amazed at my own ligthness and glee,/In the late afternoon choosing a safe spot to pass the night,/ Kindling a fire and broiling the fresh-kill'd game,/Falling asleep on the gather'd leaves with my dog and gun by my side." None of the lines rhyme, however, the poem does tell a story about a hunter. However, since it's written in lines instead of sentences I guess it's considered poetry instead of prose.

  19. Walt Whitman was very oppionated. He liked to think on his own and stick to what he thought was right and what he thought was best. In his background information it says, "The figure he so carefully crafted and put on display was not a surrogate, but the man himself." In a couple of his poems, he touches base on the Civil Rights Movement and slavery. He was nothing other than himself and people didn't like it, then he did not care. He did his own thing and made sure he made it in the world as a writer no matter what it took to do so.

  20. Walt Whitman was a very creative man who fought for the things he belived in. He used a new creative style of writing new for his time and at first few people appericiated it for what it was. Also, Walt Whitman encorperated many historical events into his poetry/writing. And the great star early droop'd.." from “When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd” tells a story where a great star droops from the sky and the star is symbolising the assassination of president Abraham Lincoln.

  22. The most prominent style that Walt Whitman uses is the free verse writing style. It has no set form, but the writer creates writings with the way they want to. That being said Whiteman does not rhyme often and he chooses to write about things such as sexuality and death. In his poem 'Hours Continuing Long', the quote "Hours of my torment—I wonder if other men ever have the like, out of the like feelings?" (White line 7) This quote demonstartes Whitmans writing of homosexuality which is one of the controversal topics he wrote about.

  23. Walt Whitman was more of a modern poet in America. He did not follow the typical style of writing that was used by poets. He started by using free verse in his writings. His work often looks like complete sentences in stanzas. He also developed an idiosyncratic style of writing. He was a strong independent man who fought for what he believed, "Resist much, obey little,".

  25. Walt whitman uses a style of free verse to express his views. it is almost a narrative view. Whitman to qoute 'It was seen every hour in the actions of the men of that city and alltheir looks and words." here i feel as though he is saying a city is full of all different types of looks this gives a city and people a narrative view

  26. Walt Whitman was one of the most influential poets in American history. Whitman aimed to go beyond traditional poems and created them into something more complex and new. When he wrote he wanted to write about important situations going on around him. He tends to lean more towards writing about American experience and its government. His style choices were righteous towards American issues, democracy and the nature of life. He does not care what anyone thinks about his poems; he just writes what he thinks is needed to be put out there. “The secret of it all is to write in the gush, the throb, the flood, of the moment – to put things down without deliberation – without worrying about their style – without waiting for a fit time or place. I always worked that way. I took the first scrap of paper, the first doorstep, the first desk, and wrote – wrote, wrote…By writing at the instant the very heartbeat of life is caught.”

  27. Walt Whittman was an inspiring poet. His style was compasionate, and he stood up for what he believed in. I think what sets him apart from many poets is that he believed in the abolition of slavery and equal rights, and also celebration of one's self, and being proud of your country. "And what I assume you assume, For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you." This quote shows that Whittman felt that everyone was equal, inside and out.

  29. Walt Whitman writes whatever comes to mind, and isn't afraid to write what he wants. He wanted to express himself in a very new way, so he started using Free Verse poetry. He tried to capture the young hearts and souls of American youth. "I see great things in baseball. It's our game - the American game." is a good way he tries to get the young audience to pay attention to his work.

  31. Walt Whitman wanted people to stay true to themselves and not what society wanted them to be. That’s the main thing he tried to get across in his writing. Like for instants when he wrote "Resist much, obey little." He wants you to resist the temptation of what everyone want you to be and to be your own person.

  32. Walt Whitman is very passionate in his writings. In, "I Hear America Singing" Whitman tries to get the readers to feel proud of living in America because he is talking about the jobs people are doing and that the result of everybody doing their job makes America prosperous. Whitman mostly uses a free verse style of writing that allows the reader to understand what is on Whitman's mind and the readers get to see his views on things."Singing with open mouths their strong melodious songs", this line from, "I Hear America Singing", means that everybody is doing their jobs and that is why America is succeeding.

  33. Whitman used a different style of writing than most poets. He uses the freeverse style of writing. He also included slang words rather than the typical english terms. Many of Whitmans poems relate to life, and America. "I hear America singing, the varied carols I hear." This line from the poem explains how Whitman writes about his homeland and the people within it.

  34. Walt Whitman was a good person, under my standards. He supported the opposition to slavery before the Civil War even happened. He also believe in making your own choices and going against the grain and not listening to what everyone else says. "Resist much, obey little." His style was free verse poetry and his poetry had a good underlying, deeper meaning. He used very good metaphors to get his point across and made it sound pretty, too.

  35. Walt was a fantastic explorer who ventured all over the world looking for the magic box of cereal. He constantly had to fight the evil washing machines that would come out of no where in an attempt to steal Walt's magic shoes. The shoes was said to hold the power of talking in French. With this power he could easily beat lord Man who was the evil emperor at that time. Lord Man new this so he sent millions of troops Walt's way. But with the power of the French speaking shoes he destroyed all the armies going his way. Eventually he tracked down Lord Man and took over as emperor. With his new power as emperor he forced the citizens to give him the magic cereal box. He also wrote poems and stuff along the way.

  37. Walt Whitman’s poetry was very inspiring and easy to understand. His poetry is very simple. And he also writes in free verse. In “I hear America Singing,” Whitman celebrates freedom in the United States and freedom as an individual. “Each singing what belongs to him or her and to none else” is what Walt Whitman says in “I hear America Singing.” Meaning, everyone is an individual and everyone has freedom in America.

  38. Walt Whitman was very eccentric for his time, but when read today, his style choices make perfect sense. His pioneering of free verse allowed his work to be spoken aloud with great effect, owing to his understanding of the cadence of language. He does not use imagery exactly, but rather uses words that let you see his subject not just in your head, but in your heart. As he says in "I Hear America Singing" "Each singing what belongs to her, and to no one else." So truly, the thing that signifies Walt Whitman the most is his essential straying from the normal constraints of poetry. He did his own thing, he did.

  39. Whitman was a different kind of poet. He mostly wrote in free verse, which is a form of poetry that refrains from consistent meter patterns and rhyme. He writes about everyday people, and America and its culture. He is also very descriptive when he writes."I hear America singing, the varied carols I hear", is from Whitman's poem "I Hear America Singing" and it shows how he talks about America and her beauty.

For instance, in his poem "I Hear America Singing", he writes "I hear America singing, the varied carols I hear" and discribes people's pride in what they do. Whitman's writings allowed readers to be able to see and understand what he was thinking.

  41. Walt Whitman has a very inspiring style of writing. When he writes he seems very proud and makes the people feel good about what they do in America. "I Hear America Singing" was a poem he wrote on how each person was singing a song showing how happy they are with America. He wants them to not feel discouraged about where they live. They should feel great about being apart of this country. "Singing with open mouths their strong melodious songs." This shows how open they are with telling people they are happy with what they do and stand up for what they believe in.
