  10. Chapter 6 takes place on the last day of Dill's visit. Jem and Dill decide that they want to peek into the Radley house, and they end up dragging Scout with them. The kids make it to the back porch windows, but when they go to look in, they see and hear a man coming towards them. They hide until he disappears and then they run for it. Scout trips as someone shoots at them. They all manage to duck under the fence, but Jem's pants get stuck so he leaves them there. When they get back to the house, the neighbors are all around the front gate of the Radley house, where Mr. Radley said he shot at a negro. Atticus notices that Jem doesn't have pants on and Jem lies and said he lost them in strip poker. Later that night, Jem sneaks back out to retrieve his pants. He finds them folded neatly over the fence, and that they had been crudely mended.

  11. Dill asked if Scout and Jem wanted to go for a walk, Scout thought it was weird because you didn't just go for a walk for no reason. He soon found out that Dill and Jem plan to sneak over to the Radley's house at dark so no one would see them. Scout joined them so they wouldn't think of her more of a girl. They went through the back and through the garden. Jem and Scout held Dill up so he could look in the window, but there were curtains so he couldn't see. So they decided to try the back window. Jem was looking in the window when Scout saw a shadow of a man with a hat on. The shadow moved across Jem, once the shadow of the man returned to where it came from Jem jumped off the porch and all of them ran to the fence. Jem held the fence up so Scout and Dill could get out but then Jem got stuck. They heard a shot gun go off, and all the neighbors circled around the Radley's house. Mr. Nathan Radley said he shot at a Negro in his garden, but he shot in the air but next time he won't aim high. When Atticus asked where Jems pants were Dill lied and said they were playing strip poker and he won them. So that night Jem when back to get his pants so Mr. Radley wouldn't find them the next morning.

  16. Chapter six is at the end of the summer. Dill is spending time with Scout and Jem for the last time that summer. They decide to go for a walk. Jem and Dill want to go peek in the window at the Radley house. They drag Scout along with them even though she doesn't want to. They cant get a good look in the side window, so they go around to the front and Jem gets on the porch only to be scared by a dark figure. They all begin to run and in the midst of things Jem gets caught on something and loses his pants. The children run out towards their home to see all their neighbors gathered. They say that Mr. Radley saw a "white nigger" and if they see him to tell him to keep out of his yard or next time he'll shoot him. Then all the adults notice that Jem's pants are missing. They demand to know why and Dill tells them they were playing strip poker with matches. Atticus tells Ms. Rachel that it is normal for children to do this at a certain age. Later that night after Dill leaves, Jem travels back to the Radley house to retrieve is pants. When he returns he has his pants and they were repaired (though not very well), and he is very scared. The chapter ends with them going back to bed.
